TF2 Mapping Episode 1: References and References

Although I know that I have the talents to finish a tf2, I have never successfully done so. By participating in this competition, I am hoping to finish a map in 2 months.

I dont have a lot of time in my hand but what gives? I can try this one out.

To explain the rule a bit, this competition makes everyone play 'connect 5' to choose the map theme to work with. The theme I chose is this:

Castle + Farmland combination is pretty much unheard of before in tf2 mapping community so I decided to find some reference pictures to work with. Here are some I found:

Generic castle and generic wheat field. Still a nice image. The lighting makes the castle yellowish which nicely blends the castle into the yellowish field.

Austrian and greenish farmland. Interesting to see sloped farming in Austria. Some medieval-looking buildings are something I might want to include too.

The castle is huge and grand in the distance while the 'peasants' harvest. Not sure how grand I want my castle to be.

Very interesting geometry to start off with. It also has bridge that I might even be able to fit in since one of the requirements of my entry is 'objective on bridge.' Some attackers might be able to jump out of that steam to try to capture. The right side of the picture looks like it can be connected with the farmland.

Farmland can easily be associated with autumn.I really like the combination here. The grass almost contrasts the colourful autumn trees and brown castle.

This is mostly for the look of the castle. Almost no walls are flat. Bridges are used in some places.

Some pictures of medieval houses.

This one surprised me because of how oddly shaped the building is. This is much more modern looking than I thought.

I remembered that someone already made a map using 'harvest' and 'medieval' theme and this is the map:

I'll be able to reference the material choices from this map. I am unsure about the skybox however since it makes everything look dull? A 2fort feel farmland might better suit. Just a clear sky with moving cloud and a sun.

While I was browsing for reference pictures, I also got some idea. I might be able to make a tight corridor flank into a busy autumn market place.

Next I need to be coming up with some layout idea but that will be a story for another day.
